Is Life Meant to Be Hard?

Is Life Meant to Be Hard?

By his own admission, James Hahn didn’t have the focus or commitment to be a successful pro golfer. He spent too much time partying and goofing off with his buddies. He didn’t push himself or try harder. The 33-year-old worked in a shoe store and struggled to make ends meet, as he dabbled at his golf hobby. He had become skilled at making life hard when it should have come easy.

Most of us have had aha moments that could be life changing, if only we took action to capitalize on the opportunity the epiphany presented. One of those moments came for Hahn during a PGA TOUR Canada event in Edmonton when he was trying to figure out how he could borrow money to pay his caddie and buy a plane ticket home to California.

“It just kind of hit me,” Hahn explained in an interview with PGATOUR.com. “Hey, you have an opportunity to do something with your life.”

That realization alone carried him farther in this tournament than he had ever finished before, eighth place for $3,000 in winnings, which more than covered the cost of his caddie and a plane ticket home.

In the aftermath, Hahn set about changing his thinking about success. He created his own program of positive thinking. “I would write down on a sticky note, ‘I will putt great today,’ and I put that everywhere, right next to my toothbrush, on the mirror in the bathroom, on the toilet seat, everywhere.” Before each tournament, he repeated a mantra, “I will putt great tomorrow. I will putt great tomorrow.”

He fortified his mind with positive thoughts and that translated into a heightened focus and skill level. He had suffered financially until he made that choice to shift his thinking and where best to invest his time and focus. His professional fortunes steadily turned around until, in early 2015, he won his first PGA TOUR Tournament, the Northern Trust Open, which landed him a playing position in the Master’s Tournament and a well-deserved introduction to the public spotlight.

This anecdote has universal applications and lessons far beyond the game of golf, especially for those who want financial independence to flow from your entrepreneurial endeavors.

Hahn’s story of achievement illustrates a powerful point that is a central theme of this book: shift your focus, exercise your choice to have a more positive attitude, take the necessary actions, and you will experience the ease of getting results you never may have dreamed possible. It’s that simple. It can be that easy.darn-easy-cover-3d-202x300
